Default Canadian crew crash - October 17, 1943

    Hi all,
I've six canadian airmen killed in a flying accident
and buried at BATH (HAYCOMBE) CEMETERY.
The accident was on the 17/10/1943 (killed accidentally?).

All were from Royal Canadian Air Force
Sgt DUHAMEL JAJ R/195135 - Air Gunner
    F/Lt HOLMES LL C/8076 - Radar - Tlg
Sgt MARCHESSAULT JJMP R/164704 - Air Bomber
    F/Sgt MEILLEUR JGA R/135024 - Pilot
    F/O MORISSETTE JAL J/22745 - Navigator
    W/O SMITH G R/128614 - Wireless Op./Air Gunner
Does anyone know the circumstances of this accident?
I wonder then the type of aircraft and Squadron ?
    Thanks. Pavel

    Hi Pavel,

From Chorley's BCL, Vol 7 (page 256) the aircraft was a Wellington X (HE824) from 23 OTU on a night cross country exercise. Presumed to have iced up and crashed one mile west of Stonehenge.

But it only shows five being killed. Nothing about F/Lt Holmes.

Also, on 7 October 1843 Meilleur was in another crash when a Wellington X (HE823) had an engine cut out on take off. It slammed into an embankment and smashed its undercarriage.

    Regards,

    Dave

    Hi Dave
Thank you very much for your help. F/Lt Holmes remains elusive. It's a big mystery.

    Pavel,

For what it's worth, Airman's Cross is at Airman's Corner, about 2 km west of Stonehenge, which probably explains why he, and the crew of HE824, are buried in the same cemetery.

Detailed map of location at http://www.mikebouckley.net/stonehenge/index_files/shosmap1.gif . Photos at http://search.aol.co.uk/aol/image?q=airman%27s+cross&v_t=sb_uk

Further to my last, and digging into "Wings over Wiltshire" by Rod Priddle, HE824 crashed on the old WW1 airfield of Stonehenge. On the map indicated in my previous post, this covered the whole area within the triangle formed by the three major (red) roads, east of the road running south from Airman's Corner. The east boundary was Stonehenge itself.

The aircraft had left Stratford-on-Avon at 1830 hours.
