Default Tomahawk IIb AK146, 2 Sqn, cr. 23rd April 1942?

    Hello everyone

On the NELSAM website, it lists Tomahawk IIb AK146 of 2 Sqn as 'Abandoned and crashed near Durham'. Can anyone give any further details? Pilot, aircraft's individual letter, crash site perhaps?

I've tried to download the 2 Sqn ORB from the TNA website, but it seems to be playing up at the moment and gives me 1,626 results when I search for 2 Sqn and 1942...!!

    Regards

    Simon

    Hello Simon,
Have a look at AIR27/19/30, it may be what you are looking for.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks for that Bruce - I found the ORB Record of Events under AIR27/19/31 too.

    Regards

    Simon

EDIT: except that's April 1943, not 1942...any idea of the reference for April 1942 Bruce, if it's available on the TNA site?

    F1180 has pilot as Acting F/L P B Hall 42984.

Crash site map ref is indistinct on a few chars but my best guess is:

    Sheet 15 - (8?) (2?) 6 5 3 3

    Simon,

According to Air Britain Serials AA100 -AZ999
It records the crash as abandoned near Thornaby (however it dos spell it as Thiornaby)

Thank you Ross, Bruce and Chris...

AIR27/19/21, the Summary of Events from the ORB, states:

"F/Lt P. B. Hall in Tomahawk AK146 got out of control in a cloud. Aircraft crashed on a searchlight position near Thornaby. F/Lt Hall made a successful parachute descent."

I can't find the Record of Events bit of the ORB on the TNA site though, which may give more detail.

I've been looking for photos of 2 Sqn Tomahawks, and interestingly the ORB for April 8th mentions that Charles Brown arrived to take aerial photos of Tomahawks in flight.

    Regards

There is no "Record of Events" Form 541 for April 1942. I think you will find that the Charles Brown a2a photos of 2Sqn are in the RAFM Collection http://navigator.rafmuseum.org/simpleSearch.page.do Just type "Tomahawk" into the search.

In addition to what Steve has posted, I believe there are group photos of 2 Sq in the IWM archives which may help. As the photos are in a donated private collection, they are unlikely to appear in the Photographic Department archive where you might have expected to find them. Put "2 squadron", complete with double quotation marks, in the IWM Collections Search bar.
