Default RAF Fighter Command Combat Tours

    Greetings to All,

My initial post to the Forum; Anyone have information concerning the length of a fighter pilot's combat tour during the 1939-1945 War ? Was any information published on this by the R.A.F. ?

    Thank you,

    Pyker

    Hi,

According to Warren Carrol's book, Eagles Recalled, the maximum term required to complete a tour of operational duty with Fighter Command was 200 hours (offensive) or 400 hours (defensive) or a maximum of 18 months.

    Hope it helps,

    Fox.

    Hi Pyker,

    welcome to this forum.
This question is quite difficult to answer as it can change time to time and it was not the same for different areas and type of fighters.

    for example in 1944:

Day Fighters - 200 hrs except South East Asia (convoy patrols counted half) - South East Asia 300 hrs
AI Night Fighters - 200 hrs or 18 moths except Med and Middle East, Med/Middle East 150 hrs or 18 months,
    Night Fighters - Bomber Command - 1st tour: 35 sortie, 2nd tour 20 sorties
    - Fighter Command - 200 hrs or 18 months
    - South East Asia - 12 months
    - Med and Middle East - 150 hrs or 18 months

And sure there were also some notes, exceptions, etc.

Thank you Fox and Pavel your comments are appreciated ! Made a search in the classic book FIGHTER ACES OF THE R.A.F. 1939-1945 (E.C.R. Baker)and found several items of interest:

James E. Johnson had 515 Sorties
Neville F. Duke 496 Sorties ,or 486 and a total of 712 hours in 3 Tours (per ACES HIGH 1994 Chris Shores etal )
    Colin F. Gray 670 hours 4 Tours
Donald E. Kingaby over 450 Sorties

    Some very brave men !
