Default Spitfire production June 1944 Unshackled Spirit

It has been my good fortune to locate a letter issued by the Ministry of Aircraft Production 'Director of Public Relations' as sent to the Air Ministry Press Officer on the 19 June 1944. This relates to a confirmation of the order of a Spitfire to be named 'Unshackles Spirit'.

This named aircraft serial number remains unknown to this day but having traced this letter which confirms my previous research which is included in my recently published book titled 'Unshackled Spirit'. Has anyone any suggestions as to estimating serial numbers coming off the production line on or around the 20 to 25 June 1944.

Forgive me if I am way off on any possibility here, its a long shot but hope from the forum I may glean a little bit of knowledge as to how the numbering system worked.

    Hello,
"Spitfire - the History" might have the answer.
But what certanty have you that the named aircraft would have been a new one ? Could not the name have been applied to any available aircraft near to where the presentation "cerimony" (ie Mayoral visit to a Factory or Squadron ) was to take place ?

    Alex.
Under the scheme operated the sum of 5000 permitted anyone to have a name applied to a Spitfire in effect it was a significant purchase to 'buy' a Spitfire. In this case the prisoners of war provided that sum of money and it was on that date in the letter that this particular aircraft was to be duly identified.

    Hello Colin,

From the Internet site "Spitfires.ukf.net" I found the following:

    MT718,821,937,938.

    21st June 44

    22nd June 44
    MT720,721,940,942.
    NH401,
    PL131,138,146,261,332,333,338,369,384,386,398,401,

    PL133,262,334,335,383,392,396,400,404,405,407,423, 424,432,433,434,444,859.

    25th June 44
    MT943,945.
    PL382,389,397,406,425,429,430,435,436,437,446,862, 863.
    RM654,686,727,729,730.

It is possible that some of them may be eliminated and perhaps matched with names.
Hope it is of some use.
    Good luck

    hello

There might be some details in "Gifts of War" about the presentation Spitfires. I don't have a copy myself, but I'm sure a few forumites have this volume on their shelves. Also, some of the Air-Britain Registers have a section at the end of the book with the known names attributed to a specific machine, but I think that "Gifts of War" should be more complete.

Default Spitfire production 1944 - Unshackled Spirit

On this occasion "Gifts of War" does not provide answer to the identity of this aircraft, To qoute: "It is known to have been a Spitfire Mk.IX but sadly the vital serial number is not known".

Apparently funds were raised by 2,600 Army Officers and 500 Aircrew - all POWs - donating their pay under the guise of donations to a charity via the Swedish Red Cross. "Gifts of War" goes into more detail referring to a book entitled "Behind the Barbed Wire - Memories of Stalag 383", which seems to have been the main source of information.
