    Default F/Sgt. (WOP/AG) Douglas Harry Proudman - 635790

Hi, I stumbled across this forum while researching my relative, Douglas Proudman (his father was the brother of my great grandfather). The death certificate states Douglas died, aged 20, on 27 April 1941 in North Devon Infirmary, Barnstaple. Cause of death reads: "Fracture of the base of the skull accidentally and by misadventure sustained through an aeroplane crashing at Furse Park field, Luscott Farm in the parish of Ashford in the county of Devon, on the 25th April, 1941. Lived approximately 1 day, 22 1/2 hours no P.M." An inquest was held on 28 July 1941 by S A Copp, coroner for the Borough of Barnstaple. I have been unable to find a report of the inquest in the newspaper archives on line, even though those held on dates either side of 28 July were reported. I have also failed to find any reference on line to a plane crash in Ashford. Can anyone please advise how I can find more information on this accident? Also, how can I obtain details of Douglas's service record? He was an only child and there is no-one left to ask.

Actually see this list of crashes for april 25, the Beaufort in Devon. Compare that location to the death cert.

Thanks for that information Dennis; I looked at the list as you suggested, then I looked at a map of Devon. "15 miles north of Ashburton" is nowhere near Ashford, so it could not have been the Beaufort L4458.
Another site informs me that Douglas H Proudman was in 248 sqn., but from Jan - Jun 1941 they were based at Dyce, Aberdeenshire; so what was Douglas doing in Devon? Apparently a detachment was sent to Cornwall to carry out long range fighter patrols, but this wasn't until Sep 1941

Please note on the map there is an estate named Ash Barton just to the east of what is marked as Furze Park Woods, above Barnstaple. Ash Barton versus Ashburton, a typo in the transcription of the crash record, or when the crash was being recorded the clerks may have assumed it was Ashburton down south.

His listing with 248 Sqn relates to 1940 period, as he has no unit listed against him on CWGC this suggests he was on a new posting at maybe 3 OTU.

Does anyone have 3 OTU ORB handy?

Just noticed also that Chivenor the base of 3 OTU was in that area also.
