Default RAF Claims - 6th July 1941, 14:30hrs, Merville, France

    Hi all,

On pages 59 & 60 of the book:

Fighter Pilot: The First American Ace of World War II, By William R. Dunn

he mentions that he, and a Polish pilot of 306 Sqn, Leon H. Jaugsch shared a kill. The aircraft was identified as a ME109E and it was shot down on 6th July 1941 at 14:30hrs in the vicinity of Merville, France.

The book claims that the pilot may have been Major Adolf Galland, can anyone confirm the identity of the ME109 and its pilot?

    Many thanks,

    Jim

    Jim,
Not Galland, he had been shot down and wounded on the 2nd July.

According to Fighter Command War Diaries by Foreman there was a 306 Sqn Potentially Destroyed Claim on this date but I have not got access to his Claims book to see who it was

    Hi Jim,

Don Caldwell's Jagdgeschwader 26 War Diary makes no mention of Galland being shot down on 6 July 1941. The only German loss I could find was Bf 109 F-2 Werknummer 6715 of the III. Gruppe of Jagdgeschwder 26, which made a belly-landing at Liegescourt after being shot up by an enemy fighter. The pilot was unhurt.

Galland seems to have been shot down and wounded by a Spitfire on 2 July 1941.

    Cheers,
    Andrew A.

    Hi Jim,

    Unfortunately I couldn't find the pilot's name.

    Cheers,
    Andrew A.
