    Welcome Craig

have you obtained his service records from teh RAf, i'm assuming he has passed away at this stage?

    http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/raf-rfc-rnas.htm
    http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/raf.html
    http://www.raf.mod.uk/community/support/requestforinformationfromservicerecords.cfm

These will give the over view of his service career but you may need to apply from his nearest next of kin.

You can track his promotions in the London Gazette online
    http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/search

Due to possible poor canning errors in the PDF documents you will need to search for various versions of his name and serial number

    search for exact phrases:
    John Austin Pimlott
    J. A. Pimlott
    39563

The latter is his service number which will only appear from about 1940 onwards.

On the national archives website you can purchase and download the monthly records for the front line squadrons in the AIR 27 group of records:
    http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/raf-operations-record-books.htm

If he was with the unit for a long time, it might be best to order the ORB for a year or more on disk rather than pay 7.00 per month for 12+ months.

Someone on the forum might already have the ORB available.

    mentioned on here:

    happy hunting

Hi Alan, i received my grandfathers service history from MOD, complete with lots of blacked out bits... he was at Scampton until november 1941, then sent to Castle Kennedy in December 1941, he was then sent to South Africa to help train their air force in June 1942 back to England in December 1942 to 12 OTU, then to 15 squadron in may 1943, then to 5 (P) AFU in December 1944. promoted to Squadron Leader in March 1945, then sent to HQ 41 squadron June 1945, after the war he and his wife and my mother went to South Africa, where they stayed until 1958 when they came to Australia. i got copies of his service medals as well, which i am going to get mounted and wear on Anzac Day.
