    Default Wellington Crash 30-December-1943

I am researching a Vickers Wellington crash that happened on 30 December 1943 near Thornborough in Buckinghamshire.

I understand that it was number BK 491 of 26 Op Training and that the aircraft took off from RAF Little Horwood, Buckinghamshire, UK, on a night training exercise and crashed into the farm near the A421.

Our Parish Council has been asked to erect a memorial plaque but do not have sufficient information, such as crew names, ranks and nationalities.

Any help to point me in the right direction would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the board.

One palce the names will be is in Bill Chorleys book, Bomber Command Losses, Volume 7, OTU losses. The local library ought to be able to get a copy for you if your only after a single crew from the book which is quite large.

Googling for Wellignton BK491 reveals some findagrave.net entries:
    http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=57687983
Warrant Officer 405001 Tucker, Pilot, RNZAF

    http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=56840322
    Flight Sergeant 426961 Migner, RAAF

Which means your in a morbid kind of luck, if this aircraft is the right one, as there was an Australian Air Force member on board, RAAF F/Sgt A Migner 426961.

Go to the Australian National Archvies website:
    http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/SearchScreens/BasicSearch.aspx

and search for Migner's serial number 426961

This reveals two files that are held in Australia

The A705 Casualty file which you ought to request a scan of, the process on the Australian archvies is that they will scan the file for a small fee (much cheaper than flying there!) and you can read then hopefully of the details of the crash.
This file contains reference to the other men who died
SADLER (Sergeant); Service Number 5452422 RAF
LANE (Sergeant); Service Number 1875446 RAF
TUCKER (Flight Sergeant); Service Number 405001 NZ

Sadler and Lane are the Royal Air Force members who died.
You need to check all four mens details on www.cwgc.org

The A9301 file is his service record which with any luck might contain a photo of him.

There is a New Zealand member of the forum who wrote a book on NZ air men, he may provide you the entry from his book on Tucker.

This must you you guys also:

if the above makes any sense please let me know and also, PLEASE do not reply to his with a a quote of my own message, reply with the reply button only.

Four men on a Wellington seems a small number, I wonder were some crew members injured and survived.

    Hi Glen

I got your email. The trade of the crew members are given on the www.cwgc.org website I suggested you to look at yesterday. Please check this out. Migner does not have a trade listed against him.

And please obtain the Australian archvie file as thsi will answer many questions.
