    Default Dakota KG623

I have a request from the current pilot of ex RAF KG623, now C-GJKB with Ken Borek Air, who has asked about the war time history of this aircraft. I have information on its RCAF history after September 1946, but all I know about its RAF time is that it was with 78 Squadron in the fall of 1944. Any extra info on its time with the RAF would be appreciated.

By the way, the current pilot was born about 30 years after the aircraft was built.

The aircraft was ferried to the United Kingdom on the 31st of May, 1944. It was taken on strength with No. 512 (T) Squadron at R.A.F. Station Broadwell, Oxfordshire on the 30th of September, 1944. From there it went to No. 437 'Husky' (T) Squadron on the 13th of May, 1946.

    Default No. 78 Squadron

    G'day Bill

No. 78 (B) Squadron was still flying the Handley Page Halifax Mk. III and VI until June, 1945 from Breighton, Yorkshire. It flew its last operational sorties on the 25th of April, 1945. The squadron was transferred from Bomber Command to Transport Command in May of 1945. It re-equipped with the Dakota in June, 1945. Dakota KG623 did not serve with this squadron.

    Cheers...Chris
