Default Two DFC Citations needed please

    Hi all,

I'm looking for two citations for DFCs please, if anyone can help. I've checked carter's twin volume, but neither have a citation alongside their entry.

    S/L Harold Frederick BREAKSPEAR, 80824, LG 6/6/44, page 2699

    Flt/Lt Donald Francis GILLAM, 126864, LG 6/6/4, page 2700

Both men were with 100 Squadron, but were flying with the 1 Group Special Duties Flight at the time of the LG dates. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

BREAKSPEAR, Harold Frederick, A/S/L (80824, RAFVR) - No.100 Squadron - Distinguished Flying Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 6 June 1944. Born 1914 at South Kensington. Enlisted 1937; commissioned 1940. Citation from Air Ministry Bulletin 14171.

"An excellent captain of aircraft and flight commander, Squadron Leader Breakspear has continually displayed a fine fighting spirit and an outstanding devotion to duty. On no fewer than eleven occasions this officer has taken part in attacks on Berlin, undeterred by the most intense enemy opposition. In November 1943, two engines of his aircraft were set on fire when over the German capital, and on another occasion half of a rudder was shot away. Each time by superb airmanship and captaincy, this officer has extricated his aircraft and crew from their perilous situations."

You may find the original recommendation for this at Kew in AIR 2/8780 (recommendations with sortie lists are always more interesting). I strongly suspect you will find Gillam's recommendation in the same file.

Brilliant, many thanks Hugh, I hoped you'd come up trumps. If you're ever in dear old Blighty, I owes you a pint or three!! :)

I'm at Kew with Smudger in just over a week, if I find copies of the recommendations do you want me to forward you copies?

    Thanks again, all the best,

    Greg
