    Default Spitfire K9963 603S

This a/c is listed in The History, Aeromilitaria and The K File as being lost on 5/10/40, crashing at Bilsington, Kent. Name of the pilot is not given.

However, this incident does not appear in the 'usual' other places.

FCWD reports only one 603S loss, presumable it refers to K9807/Morton.
    BoBT&N as above.
BoB (Mason) as above except that it records loss of Hurricane K9807 sic.
The Greatest Squadron of Them All records its loss in Appendix 16, but it is not mentioned in the daily diary section.

Can anyone shine any light on this please.

    regards

    DaveW

    Hello Dave,

Alas, I cannot enlighten you with positive information regarding this case, only negative. If the Mason you mention is the same Mason as in 'Francis K. Mason', it's another example of the unreliability of the data in the works of the man.

His booklet 'The Westland Lysander' (Profile Publications, circa 1966) has misled me in many ways - as I noticed when I worked on the Lysander Squadrons pages on http://www.epibreren.com/ww2/raf/index.html

    Regards,

    Bart

I have an unrecorded and undated note for this aircraft

Crash landed Church Fenton: P/O CHARRETT

Which with such an un-usual name has to be:

    Arthur Whitelaw CHARRETT (40364)

He was promoted to F/O from P/O on 25th July 1940 so this 'incident' could have happenned before then.. Was he on 603 Sqn at the time??? or 602 Sqn or 611 Sqn

Does anyone have any reference to Charrett or a loss on this date or incident around this date in

"Greatest Squadron of them All" Ross/Blanche/Simpson

As this aircraft was supposed to be with 603 Sqn at the time
