    Hello,

    Re:
    UK - DUDDRIDGE.

    2-12-1943
    No.6(C) OTU
    Wellington VIII LB137

Took off Silloth, to carry out a non-operational training exercise. The aircraft failed to return, and it was found the next day crashed into a hill on the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre, Scotland. All the crew were killed. It is believed the aircraft became lost and that owing to low cloud was probably flying low when it crashed.

    132785 F/O (1st Pilot) Harry Oxley DRANSFIELD RAFVR +
1337561 Sgt (2nd Pilot) Jeffrey Alfred DUDDRIDGE RAFVR +
AUS420449 F/O (Nav.) Charles Clifton COOPER RAAF +
    NZ422003 F/Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Robert John WARDROP RNZAF +
    AUS412750 F/Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Victor Francis SUTTOR RAAF* +
    AUS422126 F/Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Reginald Francis CANAVAN RAAF +

Dransfield is buried in Sheffield (Abbey Lane) Cemetery. Duddridge lies in West Coker (St. Martin) Churchyard. The others rest in Campbeltown (Kilkerran) Cemetery.

    * F/Sgt Suttor RAAF, was aboard the "Oronsay" when it was torpedoed and sunk by the Italian submarine, "Archimede", off the west coast of Africa on 9-10-1942. Along with other personnel, he was picked up by the Vichy French Sloop, "Dumont D'Eurville", and taken into Dakar and interned. He was eventually released after the "Torch" landings, and later continued his journey to the UK.

More info can be found in Errol Martyn's FYT2/168 & FYT3/493.

    Hello Dave,

Must admit I made an error in originally naming AUS412750 F/Sgt Victor Francis SUTTOR RAAF as being aboard the "Oronsay". The Australian airman aboard the "Oronsay", was in fact, AUS411969 P/O John Bligh SUTTOR RAAF, who was later awarded a DFC for services with No.16 (PR) Sqn RAF. John Bligh SUTTOR RAAF was released by Allied Forces on 15-12-1942, and transported from Freetown to the UK on 12-2-1943.

I realized my mistake on reading the following book:

Wingless:A Biographical Index of Australian Airmen Detained in Wartime.
    Roberts,T.V.(Dr.)
    Ballarat:Author,2011
    p.455.

Never got around to correcting it on the forum. I did make mention of J. B. Suttor in an earlier posting: http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...K281&styleid=2

Thanks for pointing out the error, it now stands corrected on the forum.

Stapleford, Chapman, Kershaw, Lambert, all DOAS
    http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...rmen-2-12-1943

R E Rand I cannot find in the lists.

Ashby - First published as Missing then later PREVIOUSLY REPORTED MISSING, NOW PRESUMED KILLED IN ACTION
Only found him as MISSING along with Ashby, not published again in the same KIA list as Ashby

Tomalin and Cheetham are listed as killed in Flying Accident, 35 SFTS, no better detail I'm afraid.

There is some confusion (at least with me) over the ID of the Blenheim at Ponton Heath. AZ941 is listed as crashing 2/12/1941 in both ABS and Warner. L1196 is listed only in ABS as crashing at the same location, but on 2/12/1943. Has anyone resolved this pleas?

    Hi Dave,

    F1180 confirms Cat E loss of AZ941 on 2/12/43.

    Two fatalities, Pilot F/O J G Davison.

No F1180 for L1196 on any day around 2/12/43.

    Regards
    Ross

Hi, Sgt G A Chilvers was NOT in Halifax DJ982. He was killed in the crash of Halifax DG282 at Croft on the same date. Both 1664 HCU aircraft.

See Chorley. Vol 8, page 76

    regards Rich
