    Ok, thanks Ross.
Got to ask what you expect to find in the Casualty file that is not available else where?
I've had a few previous Air81 files, some are very basic and contain very little information, and others contain invaluable information on the loss of the aircraft, witness statements, interviews by surviving members, repatriation interveiws, etc. When researching someone, or the loss of the aircraft, every snippet of information adds another piece to the puzzle. Seems there is no easy way of doing it. I didn't realise the FOI thing was for closed files at TNA, I thought it was for files still at AHB and the FOI facillitated their release to Kew. Why are they released to Kew if they are still closed ? I thought they had to be 'sanitised' before they went to Kew. As for the records at RAAF etc, no, when available they are service records, not what I thought maybe Air81 type files. I did have a couple of pages of very interesting information of one of the RAF airmen from the April 1945 aircraft loss, that someone told me was from Ancestry-Canada. How do Ancestry Canada get hold of documents that haven't been released by UK's AHB ? These anomalies are so frustrating.

    Andrew,

Ancestry Canada got the documents from the Library and Archives Canada, not the AHB. Copies of MRES reports etc were put in the service files of those killed. I know the AHB weren't thrilled but as the people at the LAC are not obligated to uphold the UK's Data Protection Act (our laws in Canada predate the DPA by a good 25 years), there is very little they can do about it. There will come a point where the LAC reclaims these excerpted files and posts them on their own site....hopefully with the ancestry leaf removed from the dead airman's mugshot.

    Regards,

    Dave

Freedom of Information is a request to have witheld information released - As you have not applied to RAFAHB for info - no FoI can be entertained - If they reply and say info redacted or retained under GDPR Act then you can submit an FoI.

The Casualty Files are being released to the TNA on the understanding that the TNA applies due diligence on the GDPR Act - hence some files closed for a declared period.

Most that Paul and others are having opened by FoI to TNA is to have living persons details redacted. For my books I used to contact RAFAHB to state what I knew/suspected and asked for confirmation. They replied as either "confirmed" or "not correct" nothing more - but my letter is attached to the file and as a living person it created a Closed File on transfer.

Have you followed the info I gave you to access A705 of Hallyard - this is not his service record - page 14 is the MRES report on the crash and burials.

Ross, I fumbled initially through thousands of files before I found the A705 for Halkyard, but find it I did. Yes, thats definately the casualty file for Halkyard, obviously concentrating on him, with the crossover on the MRES report on the crash and burials. It also tells me that it was a direct flak hit that brought that Lancaster down. See, thats what I mean, the Canadians, the Australians, have and release these files, and we in the UK........ It is advantageous to have had an Australian or Canadian on the crew and have a better chance of finding these files ! Many thanks for your tips, your expertise and knowledge are well appreciated.

The 'closed' files, do they still show up on TNA search for those names, and they say 'closed', or does the search come up with 'no results found' ? In which case, how would you know they were at TNAs ?

All closed files held (transferred) to TNA show up in the results - it just lists them as closed with a link to get them owned (FoI)

Thanks Paul, thats very interesting. I notice of all those files you listed, even the higher number ones are still only 1940 events.

Yes most closures were in a particular couple of early releases. Maybe change of personnel or policy since has meant that files are now redacted now
