    Default 64 Sqdn (Harrowber) - 1st August 1944

    Hello,

On 1st August 1944, a Spitfires' formation from 64th RAF Squadron, escorted Mosquitoes in the Angers' area, West of France (time of taking off : 15h15).

I would like to know the identity of the 64 Sqdn's pilots who were part of this formation and, if posible, the markings of their aircraft.

    Many thanks in advance

    Default 64 squadron

    Hi Pierre,
I only have part of the ORB for 64Sq,
from my 'harrowbeer in focus' book & further compiled research as follows :-

'whilst escorting Mosquito’s which were to bomb oil storage tanks at Angers, A ME-109G was shot down by W/Cdr Bird-Wilson, ( who was flying Spitfire IXb, ML397, 5J-D, instead of his personal Spitfire IX, HB-W, MK782 ), after a tree top combat, the pilot baling out amidst a shower of papers, before his aircraft crashed into a field near Cande, And F/O O'Neil, 64 Squadron, Shot down another ME-109G over an airfield west of Angers, F/O O'Neil chased the ME-109 through the airfield Anti-Aircraft fire before he saw it's pilot bale out and his aircraft crash. Unfortunately the operation was not without loss as W/O Hinton, of 126 Squadron, Spitfire IX, 5J-B, NH397, crashed and was killed near Totnes.

It seems that the enemy aircraft were possibly from IV / JG 27 which lost four 109’s on this date :-

    1944-08-01 Bf.109.G 0 Uffz Schwarz Disparu 2./JG27
    1944-08-01 Bf.109.G 0 Lt Günther Ernst Tué 10./JG27 Varades[118] Varades
    1944-08-01 Bf.109.G 0 ? IV./JG27 ?
    1944-08-01 Bf.109.G 0 ? IV./JG27 '

Sorry I have no further details.
    Cheers
    Jerry

    QUOTE=brewerjerry;8172]Hi Pierre,
W/O Hinton, of 126 Squadron, Spitfire IX, 5J-B, NH397, crashed and was killed near Totnes.

Hi Jerry. do you have any more on Hinton? I cannot find him in CWGC or in the death registers.

    regards

He is on CWGC as Hinten. Also Hinten in Robert Cleworth's Guide to Australian War Graves 1939-45 Westyern Europe.
