    Hello,

Re: (UK) - BAGLEY, GROS, HILL, HOWELLS, SMITH and WATSON

    9-1-1944
    No.131 OTU, Castle Archdale.
    Catalina IB FP193

Took off Killadeas, 0915, engaged in a non-operational low-level bombing exercise, and was making its second run over the target when it crashed on Lough Erne, County Fermanagh. It appeared that the pilot who was turning on to the target failed to pull out of a diving turn and flew straight into the water, crashing half-a-mile from the target. The surface of the Lough was calm and there were streaks on the surface.

1335224 F/Sgt (Pilot) Bernard Edward SMITH RAFVR +
1339833 Sgt (Nav.) Robert Hugh Davis WATSON RAFVR +
    AUS418982 F/Sgt (Nav./B.) Alfred Frank SHERRY RAAF +
1431670 Sgt Harry BAGLEY RAFVR + (Missing)
1591061 Sgt (Air Gnr.) Stanley Oswald HILL RAFVR +
    Sgt (Fitt./Air Gnr.) L R B LEE - Seriously Injured
Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr.) ALDRIDGE - Slightly Injured
Sgt (WOM./Air Gnr.) LIDDLE - Slightly Injured
1600260 Sgt (Flt. Engr.) Ivor George HOWELLS RAFVR +
1649541 Sgt Edward Leroy GROS RAFVR + (Missing)

It appears as if the pilot misjudged his height badly and continued his diving turn too low. The flame floats carried in the aircraft ignited when the plane submerged, and this lit up the petrol and oil escaped from the damaged tanks.
