Just a bit of extra information on Sgt. Birch: the wreckage of his aircraft was recovered post war, and pieces were used in the construction of a composite aircraft, now on display at the Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley, BC, marked P5436.

The following were all listed as Died on active service per Flight Casualty lists
    http://ww2irishaviation.com/DOASandWAAF1944.htm

    Wrighton, Dobson, Makin,

B B W Howe is listed as Killed on active Service

CWGC register records: On 14th January 1944 S/Lr Howe was forced, owing to engine failure, to bale out from his aircraft and in doing so landed on ice in the Ohio River which gave way, S/Ldr Howe being drowned as aresult before assistance could be obtained.

Newspapers ported his body was found by dredging crews on or before the 17th January

Papers state he and S/ldr R F Harmon both bailed out of a 'U S Army' plane.

    The Waterways Journal states

Flight Lieutenant B. B. W. Howe. Royal Air Force, lost his life in the Ohio River near Bens Run, W. Va.. above St. Marys, on January 14 when he parachuted from a burning airplane His companion, Squadron Leader B T. Harmon, also of the R. A. F. landed safely on the West Virgina shore Both men were attached to the British Air Commission at Washington, D. C. The river was dragged on Friday and Saturday in an effort to recover the body of the drowned man.

And here its R S Harmon
