Default Two Spitfires collided during a sweep, 23/7/41...

    Hi,

On 23/7/41, P7750 of 111 Sqdn, and P7848 of 603 Sqdn collided during an offensive sweep (escorting Blenheims ) over France. Both aircraft crashed and were destroyed.

Does anyone know where this accident occurred ?

Sgt Alfred Gregory RAFVR was killed in P7750. I can find no matching death for P7848, and if anyone knows what happened to that pilot I would be pleased to hear.

    All information gratefully received,
    TIA,
    Ray.

FCL has Caldwell from 111 Sq. Losses for 603 Sq. 23/7/1941 - Sgt. William Jackman (R7227) PoW, P/O Hugh Blackall (R7341) drowned after ditching due to engine failure, Sgt. G.W. Tabor (W3184) shot down over France (Ross/Blanche/Simpson)

Thank you both for the information.

Further checking shows that 603 Squadron had switched to the Mark V in May 1941 and as (in my opinion) P7848 was unlikely to be with the unit in late July, my original source giving 603 as the "owner" must be incorrect.

    Regards,

    Ray.
