    Default RAF Detling raid 13/8/1940

    Hi All,

Bit of a long shot but I am looking to find a list of names of those injured during the Luftwaffe raid on RAF Detling on 13th August 1940.

In particular any of those from 53 Sqn that were injured.

I know there were 67 deaths and 94 injured including some civilians and a number of the dead I can identify as 53 Sqn but it is the injured that I would like to get a list of.

    Any ideas?

    Regards,
    Simon

    Hallo Simon,

    The following were all 53 Squadron personnel wounded in the air attack on Detling on 13 August 1940;
    .
    Sgt. David Roberts (WOp/AG) 621139
Sgt. Kenneth William Vaughan Vowles (WOp/AG) 625038
LAC Albert HenryYarwood Roberts (Electrician 2) 533154
    LAC Ronald Park (F/Mechanic) 612205
LAC George Barr Currie (I/Repair) 622216
    LAC John Jenkins (Armourer) 624487
LAC Morgan Rees Powell (A.C.H.) 630464
    AC2 Robert Foggin (F/Mechanic) 944906
    AC2 Donald Henry Lee (F/Mechanic) 911361
    AC2 Albert Topham (F/Rigger) 937305
    .
I found this information in the 53 Squadron ORB (AIR 27/503). Using the service numbers I was able to acquire their first names from the online AIR 78 files. Apart from 53 Squadron I only have names for two other personnel killed. I would be very interested to learn of any more killed or injured in this raid.

    Regards,

    Martin.

    Simon and Martin,

My father John Stitt was with 500 Squadron at Detling at the time of the raid. Robin Brooks' 500 Sqn book 'Kent's Own' quotes the following. Can scan the pages and email if you are interested:

    67 killed
    94 injured
Killed included G/C Edward Davis, Station Commander, and S/L Oliver, a flight commander with 53 Sqn.

Burials took place at Sutton Road Cemetery.

    Robert

    Hallo Robert,

Fascinating that your father was there at that time. Many thanks for the information and the offer which I will take you up on. I think you can e-mail me via the PM section. That is a book I don't have unfortunately.
Apart from G/C Davies and the 53 Squadron personnel the only other casualty I have found so far is Sgt. Frederick Messant of 500 Squadron. I know from the ORB that he had flown operationally that day but had returned to Detling.

    Regards and thanks again,

    Martin.

Will do, Martin. Oddly, Davis is commemorated at Runnymede.
