Default The fate of a Beaufighter lost overTunisia, January 1943. Info sought.

    Hello All,

I would be grateful for any information which can establish the cause of the loss of a 227 Squadron Beaufighter over Tunisia, on the night of 20th-21st January 1943. I regret, at this time, I do not know the serial number of the aircraft, but, it had taken off at 22.10hrs., on the night of the 20th January, with three other Beaufighters, from the squadron base at Ta Kali, Malta. It's crew were : 580064 W.O. G.W.C. Thomas (Pilot), and 115609 F/Lt. N.J. Lewis, DFC (Navigator).

The Squadron Operational Log (Air 27/1409) confirms that the four aircraft reached Tunisia, and straffed the road between Sfax and Gabes. The returning crews reported that one fire was seen 5 miles south of Sfax, and the Beaufighter, flown by Thomas and Lewis, was missing, though the two airmen were later confirmed as prisoners of war.

In the light of the above, I'm wondering whether the reported fire '5 miles south of Sfax', was in fact the missing Beaufighter? Therefore, any information concerning the fate of this aircraft (i.e. was it shot down by ack-ack, or force-landed through engine failure?) would be greatly appreciated.

    My thanks in advance.

    upsurge.

    Hello,

123306 F/O (Pilot) George Henry STEAD RAFVR, was a member of No.272 Sqn. Lost with Stead was Sgt (Nav.) G H. WOOLFORD.

    Tuesday, 19 January 1943 - Northern Front.

Five Beaufighters of No.272 Squadron flew a night mission from Malta to attack MT on the Sfax to Gabes Road, and again one aircraft was lost, that flown by P/O G H Stead/Sgt G H Woolford failing to return.

    Malcolm.

Fighters Over Tunisia does not mention serials.

    Discussed earlier on Forum:

    http:http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...d-airwoman-and airmen-20-1-1943

Inconclusive. l never located Woolford, or a serial.

    Col,

Thank you very much indeed for the information; very much appreciated. Extending the enquiry now, do you happen to know whether Axis claims for the period are extant to confirm how the aircraft was brought down? Once again, any information gratefully received.

    Kind regards.

    upsurge.
