Default Wellington Z1384 claimed Bf 110

Wellington Z1384 coded AR-F of 460 Sqn RAAF claimed a German Bf 110 on the night of 25-26/4 1942 while on a mission to Rostock. Can anyone tell me at which hour & if the Wellington was outbound or on the way back home ?

    Hello Soren

460 Squadron provided 4 Wellingtons and crew for that raid during the night 25/26 (and 3 against the same target during the night 26/27 !)

I quote from the form 541 "one aircraft Z1384 (F) after bombing target was attacked by an ME 110 at 5535 N 0830 E at 0328 hours 10,000 feet TAS 180 mph track 300 degs. Visibility excellent, no cloud. A yellow flare was shot up from the ground just below the aircraft. Immediatly the ME 110 was seen below the aircraft about 100 yards distant, Wellington being in between moon and enemy aircraft. Enemy aircraft attacked and Wellington returned fire astern and below Wellington 100 yards distant. Enemy aircraft again attacked and Wellington returned fire. Enemy then closed to 50 yards to port of Wellington and again made to attack. Wellington gave one long burst and bullets were seen to enter the cockpit and engines and enemy aircraft dived vertically in front of Wellington. Crew of enemy aircraft were plainly seen. Front gunner gave enemy aircraft a burst as enemy aircraft was passing in a dive. Enemy aircraft was not seen to actually crash but all Wellington crew are of the opinion that the enemy aircraft must have been destroyed. None of Wellington crew were injured. Wellington riddled with bullets and very considerable damage was sustained."

    This should answer your query.
