    Hi Alan

"Honour the Air Forces" by Michael Maton gives the London Gazette notation:

A/WO 1483335 Walter Smith RAFVR Gazette date 25 1 1946 page 653 Squadron or Unit 582 Squadron (G) (sd) - in the abbreviations it doesn't show anything for (G) and it shows only sd not (sd), and that refers to Since Deceased.

    Hope this helps

Hi Allan, thanks for that. Between 156 and 582 squadrons, he did a total of 42 ops before being lost on his 43rd, on 14/15th June 44, to Douai

    Hi Alan

No problem - happy to help - thanks for the information. Did you watch Battle Scarred on Channel 5 last night? If not see http://www.channel5.com/shows/battle-scarred which features John Hall DFC, a 92 year old former 106 Squadron Lancaster rear gunner. 60 ops, shot down 3 times, rescued from off the Scillies on one occasion.
