    Default 2nd Lieutenant Arnold SYDDALL

I have been contacted by someone in Argentina about Arnold SYDDALL, he has an aerial photograph with ' A Syddall Santa Fe' on the back.

There is a Royal Aero Club Aviatorsí Certificate for 2nd Lt Arnold SYDALL in 1918, he was born in Bolton in 1893 and his occupation is shown as 'Cotton Planter'. There is a record of him crossing into the USA from Canada in 1911 but I can't see any other record of him in the USA after then (at the moment anyway).

His WWI Medal Card show he was in the Dragoons, Machine Gun Corps then RFC and RAF which suggests he must have joined fairly early in the war - if he had been in the USA when they eventually joined in WWI then he would have been drafted.

He is in the 1919 Air Force List as a 2nd Lt as an Aeroplane Officer.

I can't see his name in the National Archives WWI RFC/RAF Service Records.

Perhaps coincidentally there is a Flight Lieutenant A. SYDDALL who was a POW in Stalag Luft 3 in WWII

I am wondering if he returned to the UK to join up, transferred to the RFC and learned to fly, specialised in aerial photography so went into aerial photography after the war.

I can't find his death or probate in England and Wales so wondering if he stayed abroad.

Just wondering is anyone has any records that they can find any more information about him.

I checked the RAF lists - this turns up in Jan 1945 https://archive.org/stream/airforcel...search/SYDDALL

    136398 Syddall, A

    Which leads to https://archive.org/stream/airforcel...e/440/mode/2up

Fg Offr wef 18 June 1943 Using the service number in LG I come up with

    1476781 Arthur SYDDALL (136398). http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issu.../1577/page.pdf

Thanks, did not see the Gazette reference.

I still have a feeling that he must have been living overseas and returned at the start of WWII then went back abroad. I will have to go over passenger lists and newspapers again.

    Hello,

Don't think Arnold/Arthur SYDDALL, are one and the same.

    24/25 June 1944
    No.463 Sqn RAAF
    Lancaster III LM574:JO-J
    Op: Prouville

Took off 2244 Waddington to attack a flying bomb site. Intercepted at 13,000 feet by a Ju 88 whose fire caused an explosion, throwing clear F/O Syddall. Debris from the Lancaster fell at Longuevillette (Somme), 3 km SW of Doullens. Those who died are buried at Amiens in St-Pierre Cemetery.

AUS417248 P/O (Pilot) Jeoffrey Maxwell TILBROOK RAAF +
1725436 Sgt (Flt. Eng.) David Jesse DOWE RAFVR +
AUS416651 W/O (Nav.) Hubert George CARLYLE RAAF +
136398 F/O (Bomb Aimer) Arthur SYDDALL RAFVR - PoW
    AUS412469 W/O (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Alexis Charles MINEEFF RAAF +
1251477 Sgt (Air Gnr.[MUG]) Charles Frederick PENN RAFVR +
    AUS419126 F/Sgt (Air Gnr.[Tail]) Maxwell MacDonald LACK RAAF +

    See: BCL5/302

No.463 Sqn RAAF, hardly had need for a 50 odd year-old Bomb Aimer in June 1944! An Arthur SYDDALL was born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1921 (possibly, a son/relative?).

    Hello

From his PoW questionnaire in WO 344 series at Kew, I confirm Arthur SYDDALL 136398, 50 Squadron, attached to No. 463 Squadron.

Born 14 September 1921, joined May 1941. Private address in Bolton, Lancashire. (I lived in that town for 5 months when I was an Erasmus exchange student !).
