Default F/Sgt. Herbert George Clarke (1600754) Air Gunner

The above served on 106 Squadron from 16/12/1942. I suspect he completed a tour of ops there. Can anyone tell me who the rest of his crew were and which ops he flew.

He also had a caterpillar club badge. Can anyone enlighten me as to where he earned it. Units 1? AGS, 1654 CU, 106 Sq., 17 OTU, 617 Sq. Have been through the relevant Chorley volumes without success. Any assistance would be appreciated.

    John,
Not very helpful but, my 106 ORB only goes to end Dec 42, and a crew appears for the first time, on 21st Dec, to Munich, with a F/Sgt A/G called Clarke, but ORB records him as E.R. Clarke though.

    F/Lt W.N. Whamond, Pilot.
    Sgt P. Humphreys, F/E.
    WO R. McClelland, Nav.
    Sgt J. Cunninghame, A/B.
    F/Sgt J.R. Hanson, W/Op.
    F/Sgt B.E. Sutton, A/G, M/Upper.
    F/Sgt E.R. Clarke, A/G, R/Gunner.

    Hi Alan,

You say the Whamond crew first appears in the 106 Sqn ORB on the 21st December (1942), to Munich. BCL3/232, has them returning early from Krefeld in Lancaster I W4238 on 2/3 October (1942), and overshooting at Newton. The Lancaster caught fire, but there were no injuries. So, probably not the same Clarke.

    Hi Col,
Oh dear, i,m going to put my lapse down to being full of flu, (the proper stuff, not man flu) and confess to not going back far enough. Their previous op, to 21st Dec, was almost a month earlier, on 28th Nov, so it looks as though it's the wrong Clarke anyway, as John says he joined 16th Dec, which is why i wrongly assumed that this was the crew.....cough cough splutter !!
    Cheers...Alan.
