Can you narrow your question down a little?

Everyone who flew on the mission would receive a medal of some sort or another at the end of the war.

These were the campaign medals such as the War Medal, the 1939/45 Star and - in most cases - the Air Crew Europe Star.

Are you meaning Gallantry Awards such as the DFC etc.?

    Default Berlin raid

    Sorry Ken,

I did mean Gallantry awards, I know about the three CGM's won, but do you know of any others DFC's DFM's etc.

    Cheers,

    John.

Default Berlin Raid 23/24 August 1943 medals

I an sorry, but this question is impossible to answer in anything other than an anecdotal way - you may be able to identify a few awards tied to the event, but not get a complete compilation - or anything near it.

As many are aware, thousands of awards were announced with no citation and even citations in the London Gazette simply used vague phrases like "one night on August 1943" or "during a recent operation against Berlin (or Franfurt, or or Essen)". The only comprehensive way to handle this query would be:

    (a) consult the Operational Record Books of all squadrons taking part
    (b) compile from the above a list of all participating aircrew
    (c) compare the list with Maton's "Honour the Air Forces" to determine which ones had been decorated
    (d) determine, through comparisons of citations and ORB entries, whether the events described (however vaguely) tallied with the ORB accounts
    (e) in cases where no published citations accompanied the awards, track down the original recommendations for awards (at Kew).

    John,

Following on from Ken's reply above, i may be able to offer some help to get you at least part of the way. I have all the No.1 Group Monthly summaries, which include details of awards, both immediate and non-immediate, made every month. I'll make a list of August's immediate awards here later on, and perhaps September and October's non-immediates. I wont have time to tell you if any of them were made for the Berlin raid you mention, but perhaps using the list you'll be able to cross-reference against the LG site and see if any were made for that Berlin raid.

I've got to go to a Union meeting shortly, but as soon as i return i'll post the list for you.

No problem John, always happy to help :)

And be sure to let me know when you're over here, i'll force myself to drink a few beers to be sociable!! Seriously, it'd be good to meet you, and i'll introduce you to a few decent Welsh ales - don't be taken in with that wishy washy muck that Steve Smith drinks that the English pass off as "beer"!! :)

    All the best as always,
