    Default Meaning of "Polkadot" expression

    Hi all,

I would like to ask for help with decoding the training flight description from may 1950 which I read as:

    Night Cross Country Polkadot HLB

As I understood it was night navigational excercise combined with High Level Bombing practice. But what about the word "Polkadot" which I was able to identify only as a motif on a scarf:)

From my point of view there are two possibilities:

    1. name of place - for example a shooting range when the HLB was performed
    or
    2. nickname of some special equipment used during the flight or procedure performed by the crew?

    Any help much apprecited.

    Hello Pavel,

Could it be something related to Aerial Reconaissance? You certainly know that the 45th TRS Squadron was nicknamed "The Polka Dots". There is a book, by Pen and Sword, if memory does not fail me intitled "Tactical Reconaissance in Cold War", which do have a lot of pictures from this unit. There are quite a lot of information...I do have this book with me and can have a look at it tonight for you...maybe we can find something about this "Polkadot" missions....
    Yours sincerely,
