Default RAAF and training in Canada

I am writing up an Australian Navigators flying career with 464 Squadron. I am lucky to have his flying log book for most answers, but I need a few gaps filling in.

He carried out initial training at Cootamundra and Parkes New south Wales, first with the No1 Air Observers course starting on April the 6th 1942, and with the advanced Navigation course at Parkes. This period of training finished on September 1942. The next entries are in his log book are on December the 5th where he was flying a Ventura in Canada with the chap who was to become his permanent pilot with 464 Squadron.

I would like to know when, and by what means he both left Australia and arrived in Canada, where could I find information of where he sailed from in Australia, port of entry in Canada and of course dates.

His first flight in Canada was with 34 OTU at Pennfield training until February the 9th 1943. He next appears in June at Methwold UK with 464 Sqd. Again, from where in Canada did he sail and port of entry in the UK , is information like this available?..and from where!
hope someone can throw some light on this.
    Many thanks.

    Hello,

As far as your pilot is concerned; AUS420074 F/O (Pilot) Elton George SWEENEY RAAF (later F/L). See:

    http://naa12.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetri...arcode=5241629

See: p.32 of 46 in particular.

The files (A705 and A9300), of his navigator, AUS420546 F/Sgt (Nav.) David Alan Stafford CROWFOOT RAAF (later F/O), at the NAA have not been digitised. For a small fee (approx AUS$16.00) you can get these files digitised.

F/O Sweeney's crew at No.464 Sqn RAAF., was as follows:

AUS420074 P/O (Pilot) Elton George SWEENEY RAAF
AUS420546 F/Sgt (Nav.) David Alan Stafford CROWFOOT RAAF
AUS412628 F/Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr.) David Ignatius MacDONALD RAAF (Born: Boston, USA)
    AUS412314 Sgt (Air Gnr.) Thomas William HENNESSY RAAF (+ 18/3/1944. No.115 Sqn. Lancaster II LL640:A4-C - BCL5/119)

420359 LAC Ernest William Rogers, later Pilot Officer was teamed with his pilot Flt Sgt Verran while in Canada, The information I am interested in is When and by what port and ship Ernest embarked from in Australia. The same goes for his journey from Canada to the UK to join 464 Sqd.

    Denis,

    Apologies, Mate.

    l pulled the wrong file!

You will need to get the following files at the NAA digitised to confirm:

    AUS420359 Ernest Willam ROGERS RAAF

    http://naa12.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetri...arcode=5262692

    and...

    AUS420308 Albert Edwin VERREN RAAF:

    Denis,

I'd be interested in obtaining a copy of the logbook pages relating to his training at No.34 OTU, Pennfield Ridge, NB (Canada).

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Denis,

I have been researching the Aussies on Course 58, 4 SFTS Saskatoon from June to October 1942. When you get a copy of his service file, if he was posted to 1 ED (Embarkation Depot) in Ascot Vale they left from Melbourne, if he was posted to 2 ED Bradfield Park he left from Sydney. My group left from Melbourne on the USAT Argentina on the 23 May 1942 and sailed south of New Zealand across the Pacific to the Panama Canal which they passed through on the 12 June before docking in New York. Then to Montreal and by train to Saskatoon arriving on 25 June 1942.

I was able through Ancestry I am able to get a passenger list of their arrival in New York. A check of the list shows Albert Verren was on the same ship. You might like to contact me off board on harleyDOT158ATbigpondDOTcom replace the DOT and AT with the usual.

    Best regards,

    John.

    Hi Denis,

I have found a photo of both Rogers and Verran. Please feel free to contact me and I'll forward it along.

    Regards,

    John.
