    Default Ventura Ferry accident

    A friend has asked about an Incident which happened to a Ventura which took off from Dorval, Canada, then crashed, probably heading for Goose Bay on the 26th Oct 1942. The fascinating thing about this incident is the number of casualties:
    4 Civilians
    10 RCAF personnel (2 Cpls, 7 LACs and an AC1)
    Surely these guys were not all on a Ventura? Were these casualties on the ground? Who were the crew? I await any information with interest :)

    Hi Alan,


    The F1180 gives 16 fatalities, all onboard.


    The aircraft is listed as being from the Transportation and Freight flight so duty was delivery flight but seems to have doubled as "Ass and Trash"

    Very prompt and interesting, but I still dont understand how a Ventura could carry the 16 persons that are given in the F1180. Where on earth were they all sitting? A normal crew of five used up a fair bit of space. I agree the aircraft was on a ferry flight, but were the 'Erks' on board as engineering support or for transport to Goose as a mobile party? The civilians may well have been Ferry pilots, but surely they were usually coming back from the UK rather than going Dorval-Goose?

    Still puzzled :)

    None of the seat and lapstrap installation more of the cargo net/mattress combination and sit on the floor.


    All as close to the C of G as possible and no moving around during the flight.

    Default Ventura Accident

    G'day

    The Ventura went down two miles east of Dorval at approximately 14:20 hrs GMT. It was enroute to R.C.A.F. Station Goose on a freight and transportation flight.

    Paul, the aircraft accident record cards have the name of H. S. Millen.

    The civilian Lodestar on which the Ventura was based had normal accommodation for 3 crew and 14 passengers in considerable comfort; the military C-60 version for 3 crew and 18 passengers in minimal discomfort. The Ventura cabin was obstructed somewhat by the Martin electric turret when fitted, and accommodation could also be compromised with fuselage long range tanks installed over the CoG position, particularly with the PV-1 version; some of the larger military radios were also mounted within the main passenger cabin. So, if cabin ferry tanks (fuel and oil) were installed, 16 persons on board would definitley be a squeeze, but so long as the ferry tanks were empty, would probably not be breaking too many rules. Remember, having been designed as a dedicated airliner, it was still a hell of a lot roomier inside than dedicated bomber aircraft such as Whitleys, Blenheims, Hampdens, Marylands, Baltimores or Mitchells! The casualty list tends to support this.
