Default Crash location 75 Sqn Wellington Z1596 26-27.7.1942?

    Dear all,

I am looking for the crash location of 75 Squadron Wellington Z1596 which was lost during the 26-27 July 1942 Hamburg raid. Four of the crew were RNZAF (all killed in action), the rear gunner Sgt. Dixon survived to be taken prisoner of war.

    Cheers, Theo

From my For Your Tomorrow - A record of New Zealanders who have died while serving with the RNZAF and Allied Air Services since 1915 (Volume One: Fates 1915-1942):

    Bomber Command

Raid on Hamburg, Germany (by 403 aircraft - 32 lost)
... 75 (NZ) Squadron, RAF (Feltwell, Norfolk - 3 Group)
Wellington III Z1596 - took off at approximately 2235-2330 on same raid as the above, and shot down by flak while flying away from the target at low level. Z1596 crashed near Dose, 10km west of Wilhelmshaven; the rear gunner was the sole survivor and taken prisoner. His four comrades were buried in the municipal cemetery at Wilhelmshaven, but later reinterred at Sage, 24km south of Oldenburg.

    Hello Errol,

Many thanks for providing these details, I will try and find a Flak claim for the loss of Z1596; none of the documented night fighter claims fits to this loss.

    Cheers, Theo

    Default 75 Sqn Assn

    Hi Theo
You might want to go to www.75squadron-raf-rnzaf.com so you can get the contact details for Glen Turner (NZ Assn) and Kevin King (UK Assn). Hopefully they can help you too :)
