    Default RAF Trade/Service Record

    Hi,
Could anyone describe the trade "Fabric Worker" in a service record, and the abbreviation of S.E.W, under "Trade Category" please.
    tia...Alan.

    Alan, Hi,
SEW normally Safety Equipment Worker. Parachute packing, dinghy's, desert survival kits, etc, etc. Fabric Worker may come from before all-metal a/c?

Another related question. As a Safety Equipment Worker, would he be posted (a) to a squadron, or (b) to the Station where that squadron was based.

    Hi Alan

Fabric Workers generally worked on the fabric covering of balloons and the few fabric covered structures such as ailerons, elevators, rudders as well as airframes such as Wellingtons and Hurricanes which were still fabric covered.

    Alan,
Seems as though you have answered your own question! Tradesman can be posted to stations, squadrons, or in fact any unit where their particular skills might be in demand. By the middle of WW2 many RAF squadrons had lost all their technical tradesmen due to constant changes in RAF organisation- they tended to be posted to Bases (RAF nomenclature), Servicing Echelons, or Stations workshops and the like, although some squadrosn (depending on their individual circumstances) may heve retained their "own" techincal staff for various reasons.

Thanks David, i know it looks as though i had the answer via his service record, but there is an underlying "niggle" in my head, due to other information i have for him.

    Hi Alan

Did he undergo a course at 11 SoTT or was he posted there?

Also Halifaxes had fabric covered flying surfaces so hence his various posting to Linton, Marston and the CUs make sense.

    Hi Malcolm,
I've edited my list above, with dates, and a couple more additions.
    Alan.
