Default RAF Castletown ORB July 1940

    RAF Castletown ORB July 1940

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hi guys

Having established that there is no ORB for 504 Squadron (flying from Castletown late 1940), I wonder if any of our members have a copy of Casteltown's ORB (assuming one has survived) for July 1940?

If so, is 504 Squadron reported as intercepting He111s on 24 July and 27 July, and are there any pilots names recorded?

    Cheers

    Hi Brian,
I have a He111 damaged at 08:49 on the 24th by an unrecorded pilot and a He111 confirmed on the 27th by an unknown pilot.
However, I cannot for the life of me find a record of my source for that information.
It could well have been Castletown's ORB.
I am planning a trip to the PRO soon so could have another look at their ORB for you.

I have info for both dates.

24 July 1940 He 111H-3 of Wekusta 1 crashed in sea 10 miles east of Wick after intercepted by Rook, Frisby and Howe of 504 Sqn at 09:05 [source missing from my notes] however, AIR 28/917 (Wick Fighter Sector HQ ORB), says the a/c was shot down by two a/c from Red section of 3 Sqn at 07:28.

27 July 1940 HE 111H-2 OF III/KG53 [again source missing] possibly shot down by 504 Sqn off Wick. I don't have pilot(s) name(s).

There should be an ORB for 504 Sqn under AIR 27/1965.

    Hi guys

There is not an ORB for July 1940 for 504 Squadron, it was not maintained/submitted to the authorities! That's what the record states.

Foreman gives the name 'Flt Lt Cameron' as the claimant for 27 July - but no such pilot on 504, as far as I am aware. Might 'Cameron' have been a station test pilot?

    Cheers
    Brian
