Default Crash at Boscombe Down 1943-45

I am told that some time between November 43 and March 45 there was a Spitfire crash at Boscombe Down in which the pilot, formerly with the RAF's Schneider Trophy High Speed Flight, was killed. It is said he was visiting either D'Arcy Greig or Boothman, fellow Schneider Trophy pilots who were successively commandants of the A&AEE, and crashed making a low pass over the field after enjoying a lunch with one these two.

    Can anyone identify the pilot?

    David,

Air Commodore DJ Waghorne was killed whilst flying Spitfire PS831 at Boscombe Down 1/4/45. He was not a Schneider Trophy participant as far as I can see, but his elder brother, HRD Waghorn, was. Air Commodore Waghorn's obit. appears in the Times of 3 April 1945.

    Thanks!

    That's the one, without doubt.
