    Default 5 Group 1940

I am seeking the names of the commanding officers of 49 and 83 Squadrons at RAF Scampton, August 1940. Any assistance would be welcome.

    Dear Custer
According to Chris Ward '5 Group Bomber Command, An Operational Record' ISBN 184415579-X which is a very well researched book
    49 Sq Wing Commander J W Gillan DFC AFC 8/4/40 - 22/12/40
    83 Sq Wing Commander J C Sisson 9/6/40 - 3/12/40

Let me know if you want any other look ups.
    Best wishes
    James

John Ward's excellent "Beware of the Dog at War - an Operational Diary of 49 Squadron 1916-1965" confirms shows 49's C.O. as "Gillian", not Gillan. Could be a typo in my book, but you might want to just double check which spelling is correct Custer :-)

    All the best,

A great many thanks for the information. I'm particularly researching the Dortmund-Ems Canal Raid of 12-13 August during which Roderick Learoyd won the VC. I'd like to obtain crew lists for the planes involved, as well as any contacts anyone may have with relatives of the men involved. Any help with this topic would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Act/W/Cmdr W.C. Sheen, for 49sqdn, before J.C. Gillan, note spelling of Gillan as shown throughout ORB.
