Default Mosquito PR XVI MM273 Oct 1950

    Hello
I found info that the Mosquito PR XVI MM273, the first Mossie attacked by a Me 262 in July 1944, crashed onto the sea off Malta in October 1950, what was the exact date, the crew, the unit and the reason?

    TIA

MM273 was passed to the Royal Navy - see:

So it looks like it's probably:
    October 31st 1950
CORDWELL, Victor H M, Lieutenant, killed
    JOPLIN, Arthur, Commissioned Pilot, killed
728 Sqn FAA, HMS Falcon (Hal Far), landing back and turned steeply to port on one engine, crashed.

He would probably have 'plonked-in' somewhere near 35.799421 14.532949 (on GE) turning 'short finals' on to Runway 31. Water not too deep at that point. Anybody know if the airframe was recovered. The wood might have suffered, but a couple of Merlins would be useful for spares - or what caused one of them to quit (if it was an uncommanded single-engined approach?).

    Hello Simon
    thanks for the prompt answer!
Yes it looks that the accident on 31 Oct 50 was probably the end of the MM 273.

    Thanks al ot
    Juha
