Default 44 Sqn Hampdens - individual code letters

    Hello,
I have been researching the first raid on Danzig which took place on 10/11.11.1940.
Of 5 detailed Hampdens three belonged to 44 Sqn.
In 44 Sqn ORB I have found the serial numbers and the names of crews assigned to this operation:
    P1322 - Sgt Ottaway,
    L4042 - P/O Stockings,
    X3025 - Sgt Atkins.
The only missing thing are the individual code letters of those aircraft.
Does anyone have any idea what letters could it be?

    Any assistance would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Greg

    Dave,
    many thanks for your info.
So there are only two letters to guess, as the serial number X3025 is definitely correct.

    Cheers,
    Greg

    Dear Greg
I have looked in The Hampden File by Harry Moyle and 5 Group Bomber Command by Chris Ward.
Neither book gives the identifying letter.
On a recent trip to Kew I was looking in a Station ORB which listed all the letters of the aircraft, unlike the Squadron ORB. This may be a way to look with your aircraft.
    Happy Hunting

    James,
Unfortunately neither Waddington Station ORB nor its appendices list the individual aircraft letters.
However, your suggestion is right, as contrary to the above, appendices to Scampton Station ORB include the list of all aircraft which took part in this Danzig operation together with the corresponding individual letters.

    Regards,
    Greg

    Dear Greg
I know these things are hit and miss depending on who filled out the forms. I am researching 83 Squadron at Scampton in the latter part of 1941. The squadron ORB lists crews, aircraft serial numbers etc as usual but does not give the letter for each aircraft.
    I was looking at
    SCAMPTON

Air Ministry and Ministry of Defence: Operations Record Books, Royal Air Force Stations. SCAMPTON. Appendices.
Collection: Records created or inherited by the Air Ministry, the Royal Air Force, and related bodies
    Date range:01 July 1941 - 31 December 1941
    Reference:AIR 28/687

This file lists all the aircraft on each raid from both squadrons at Scampton. It gives Type, Serial number, Squadron code letter, Pilot, bomb load, take off & landing time
I do not know if there is a similar file before or after these dates but I hope this helps.
    Best wishes
    James

    James,
Thank you very much for your valuable suggestion.
I will keep looking for those missing code letters.

    Greg
