    Default 570 Squadron - F/O W J James

    Hello all,

does anyone have access to the ORB for 570 Squadron? I am trying to establish the crew of F/O Walter James Jennings (422058), RNZAF. He was mentioned in dispatches with the unit but i am trying to find out when he joined the unit and who was his crew?

    Cheers, Tom

    Tom,

I don't have a specific date, but he arrived in the UK as a qualified pilot c.2 June 1943.

Thanks Errol for adding some detail i didnt have.

Rich, i have not tried it yet, i'll have a look in a minute though. I'll be interested if you find a mention of him in the ORB though. He was at 1665 HCU in May 1944, so i'm looking for the date he joined 570 Squadron after that.

    Cheers, Tom

    Hello,

I'm sorry but the 570 Squadron ORB pages I have aren't in good condition so I can only write this about Jennings' crew:

Flight Sergeant H.D. JAM_SON, 1684143, RAF, Navigator (one letter is missing so I think we should read Jamison or Jameson)
Pilot Officer J.S. HENDERSON, NZ428319, RNZAF, Air Bomber
Flight Sergeant W.P. MEATEN, 1588821, RAF, Wireless Operator
Warrant Officer A.J. TODOROFF, R206211, RCAF, Air Gunner
Sergeant J.W HILL, 1897522, RAF, Flight Engineer.

I don't have the exact date of arrival of Jennings but all I can say is that he must have arrived to 570 Squadron at least late in the second half of 1944 because he didn't flew any of the D-Day operations in June 1944 and any of the Market Garden operations in September 1944.
In my docs, at the moment, I have found 3 operations flown by Jennings (always with Stirling IV LK292 E7-V. LK292 is on a photo in one my books): Operation Varsity (24 March 1945, the Cross of the Rhine), SOE 'Blikers 5' on 21 April 1945 and an operation Doomsday (I don't have all my docs with me so I'll confirm you the date later if you want).
Here it is for the moment.
    Regards.

Bruno, many thanks for that, it is a great help! My reason for asking is that i am trying to establish the crew of Stirling EF117 of 1665 HCU which crashed 5th May 1944 near Tilstock. Jennings was the pilot and five other crew (all unnamed) suffered some slight injuries and shock.

I think i've found a relative of Meaten so i'll see if they know anything of his wartime service. I wonder if anyone knows where Todoroff was from? There don't seem to be a large amount of them living in Canada, so might be able to track him/or relatives down.

    Cheers, Tom

As usual thanks to the excellent RCAF researches of Hugh Halliday:

TODOROFF, Sergeant Alex J. (R206211) - Mention in Despatches - No.570 Squadron - Award effective 1 January 1945 as per London Gazette of that date and AFRO 425/45 dated 9 March 1945. Born 1 January 1924. Enlisted in Toronto, 17 November 1942. Trained at No.9 BGS (graduated 17 September 1943).

I've begun searches about the name and there are answers like at this link:
    http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=sheppardcanada&id=I951

I don't know if this is the same man.
    Regards.
