    Default P/O W.S. STEARNS 220 Sqn

Can anyone tell me when P/O W.S. STEARNS joined 220 Sqn and if he was a pilot or observer? He was posted from 220 Sqn in Jul 40.

Having searched the LG I believe this individual is William Stanley STEARNS (41488) can anyone confirm this?

    Best Regards

    Andy,

That is definitely your man. Unfortunately the 220 Squadron ORB for 1939 only begins at September. He was probably with them at the beginning of that month. There is no mention of him in the F.540 joining during September 1939. His first operational sortie was on September 30th as a pilot and his second was on October 1st as an observer. I would take this to indicate his main function was as a pilot as any pilot could also perform the duty of observer.
William Stanley is the only Stearns to appear in the RAF indexes in the London Gazette for 1938 and 1939. He is first recorded in the 4th Quarter of 1938, page 8250 receiving a Short Service Commission with effect from 14-12-1938 as an Acting Pilot Officer (no service numbers given in 1938). The second appearance was in the 4th Quarter of 1939, page 6797 when William Stanley Stearns (41488) is promoted to Pilot Officer from the rank of Acting P/O w.e.f. 3-9-1939 and his appointment was confirmed w.e.f. 6-10-1939.
From looking at the London Gazette one cannot be a Pilot Officer in late 1939 without appearing in at least one issue of same for 1938 or 1939.

    Hope this helps,

    Martin Gleeson.
