    Default Johnson

    G'day

    "CANADA
    JOHNSON, Otto A - AC1c(Pilot U/T) - U213033 - [ I could not find this man in CWGC lists]."

This man did not die in an aviation related accident according my record cards. The only flying accident on that day involved a Tiger Moth from No. 12 E.F.T.S. The student pilot was only slightly injured.

    Cheers...Chris

Pardon the thread hijack, but what kind of a personal number is that? I haven't seen the "U" before.

Three airmen and two WAAFs were killed and other RAF personnel injured in an accident at a home counties aerodrome. The dead are F/O Harry Wilkes; F/O Richard Francis Hubard; Corporal Harold Frank Hoare; Annie Alice Reeves, Adys Road, Peckham; Emily Marjorie Dickens, Victoria St, Dunstable. An aeroplane landing struck the WAAFs as they were crossing the runway. At an inquest on the WAAFs Monday week evidence was taken in camera and a verdict of accidental death was returned.

    Hello

    JACKSON, Robert - LAC - 1492414 - 2817 Sqdn RAF Reg - a possibility: from K. M. Oliver's "Through Adversity - The History of the R.A.F. Regiment 1942-1992" page 132:

Nos.2817 and 2876 LAA Squadrons had embarked in Landing Craft Tank (LCT) at Gosport and were heading for the invasion beaches
where they were due to land at dawn on D+2 when they were intercepted by German naval forces. LAC Derrick Dean of 2876
Squadron described the scene: “at about 0400 a German aircraft dropped flares over the convoy which illuminated the vessels for
patrolling German E Boats. Although the convoy scattered on the orders of the commander, the enemy boats were successful in
attacking some of the LCTs. The one carrying 2817 Squadron received direct hits which smashed the ramps and pierced the hull. Our craft manoeuvred alongside to take off the dead and wounded and to tow the damaged LCT towards the beaches. Despite our efforts, she began to sink and we took the remaining personnel – RAF Regiment and Royal Navy – on board while the guns, vehicles and equipment of 2817 Squadron went down with the LCT.
