ATWOOD - I was wondering whether her missing husband had in fact died, but discovered that Helen wasn't married (see additional information from CWGC). Maybe it was her fiancé that was missing. Additional checking on probate records shows her described as a spinster.
Daughter of Comdr. George Evelyn Laverton Atwood, R.N. and Madeline Elizabeth Atwood, of East Tisbury, Wiltshire. Her brother, George Robert Colvin Atwood, also died on service.
Do you know whether her 'fiance' died on not?
Martyn
Martin,
I have looked at Scotland's People death certificate. She is named as 'Atwood or Brown' and there is mention of her husband's death after D-Day, The circumstances of her death are as described. If a copy of the cert. would be helpful send me a pm with your Email address.

Thanks Dave, I was just wondering whether the missing report turned out to be correct and or if her 'husband' had ironically survived. Unfortunately with such a common name as Brown it will be difficult to locate him unless someone knows more.

Hello
REED, Frederick James - Sgt - 1585303 - the Daily Mirror of November 1st 1944 reported the trial of Sgt. James Finbar Buckley, a 21 year old rear gunner in the same air crew, who had fired a shot from a Sten gun that killed Reed. The jury
found Buckley not guilty of murder and not guilty of manslaughter and discharged him.
The Dundee Courier of July 6th 1944 had reported that Reed was fond of a joke and a leg-pull, and had told Buckley "You can't frighten me." Buckley picked up a Sten gun, put a magazine in and aimed it at Reed. Two shots had gone off, and Reed was hit in the head. Buckley made a statement that "I pointed the Sten gun above him, took my eyes off the sights and elevated the gun. I pressed the trigger. I did not think the gun would fire without a round being placed in the breech lock, and I cannot undertand how it did fire."
ABERNETHY, Joseph Sanderson - AC2c - 873289 - the Statutory Deaths Register on the Scotland's People website record him as Joseph Saunderson Abernethy, greyhound racecourse kennelsman, and that he died at 3.20 p.m. at 6, Towerhill Road, Glasgow, due to pulmonary TB.

Simon
