Default B-17's unit on 26 Sept 1942 "Morlaix" mission

    Hello again,

I’m currently writing a local book about several planes shot down in my area of France during WWII, near Brest in Brittany.
Still about my query about 133 Eagle Squadron losses of 26 September 1942, I’d like to learn the unit of the B-17’s sent to Morlaix that day (British unit probably in 1942).
They would have reached the Pyrenees and the Spanish border… Would like that being confirmed.
Also was wondering where they would have met on their return trip the 133 Sqn Spitfires that found themselves low over Brest later

    Many thanks for your help

    Best regards
    Gildas

    Hi Gildas,

According to "The Mighty Eighth War Diary" by Roger Freeman, on that day four Bomb Groups of 8 USAAF were involved in action over France:
    92 BG: despatched - 17, effecitive - 7, target: DIVERSION
    301 BG: despatched - 26, effective - 0, target: CHERBOURG / MAUPERTUS A/F / MORLAIX/POUJEAN A/F
    97 BG: despatched - 19, effective - 0
    92 BG: despatched - 19, effective - 9, target DIVERSION.

    Notes:
301 BG was recalled because escort fighters not seen. Cloud prevented 97 BG bombing: they had miscalculated a tail wind and finally turned for home over the Bay of Biscay.

I hope that you may find it of help,
    Regards,
    Greg

    Greatest thanks Greg,

97 BG seems to be the good one, even if 301 BG mission was indeed Morlaix. I will try to learn more detailed information if possible about this flight, Bay of Biscay or Spanish border …
You certainly were of some help. Thanks again.

    Regards
    Gildas
