Default F/Lt James Clapham ANDERSON 49568, DFC & Polish Cross

Whilst researching some local airmen, I came across an article in the Berwickshire News from December 30th 1952, in which it reports that the Duke of Edinburgh visited R.A.F. Waddington to open their new N.A.A.F.I., and was introduced to the Station Adjutant, F/Lt James Clapham Anderson of Greenlaw.

F/Lt Anderson is described as having "joined the RAF as a boy in 1928 and during the last war he had a most distinguished career. His decorations include the D.F.C. and Polish Cross." From the LG, I can see that he was with 57 Squadron when his D.F.C. was gazetted on September 10th 1943.

Has anyone got a few moments to look up the citation for his D.F.C. in 'the book'? And why would he have received the Polish Cross? For operations in/over Poland? Or with a Polish unit maybe?

    Many thanks

    Regards

I think 'Polish Cross' might need a little expansion. It is possible that there will be an entry in the London Gazette. He might have been recommended for the Polish medal as an RAF Nominee, rather than any specific reason, although he could, for example, have flown raids into Poland or helped train Polish crews.

Can't find a citation in the Carters' DFC book and so the award might be non-immediate ie at the end of a tour. Try the Air Ministry Bulletin (microfilm at the RAF Museum) or their manuscript cardex of awards to individuals.

Thank you for the replies Gents. I'll see if the RAF Museum can help with the DFC, and have another go at the LG website (wish me luck, I'm going in...!).

ANDERSON, James Clapham, A/F/L (49568, Royal Air Force) - No.57 Squadron - Distinguished Flying Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 10 September 1943. Following text from Air Ministry Bulletin 11391.

"Flight Lieutenant Anderson has completed a large number of operational flights, in the course of which he attacked all the main targets in enemy territory. This officer also participated in two daylight raids on Le Creusot and Milan. He has always been a strong support to his captain and in no small measure has contributed to the success of all crews with whom he has flown. His work has been of great value. He possessed expert technical knowledge which has been an immense advantage in the training of new air crews."
