    Default 501 Squadron loss: Plt Off Edward W. Gillespie (American), 9 May 1942

    I understand that 501 Squadron's Plt Off Edward Gillespie died during Circus 168 on 9 May 1942 (Spit VB, W3845), but the 11 Group ORB Appendix states that his "loss cannot be explained" as they were apparently not engaged by the Luftwaffe. Does anyone have any details on this loss, please?

    Thanks
    Steve

    Hello Steve,

    David Watkins in his "Fear Nothing" records as follows;

    'Two days later, Bob Yule was leading the Squadron again on a 11 Group sweep to Hazebrouck, escorting six Bostons. Up to thirty FW190's were sighted attacking Spitfires of 118 Squadron, so 501 quickly went to their assistance. The American pilot, Pt Off Gilespie became detached from the squadron during the ensueing fight and was shot down by a FW190.'
