Default W/Cdr Augustus Rodney Gibbes DFC

Hoping someone can help with details on the circumstances surrounding the death of the above mentioned officer KIA 16.08.1943.

Won his DFC with No.115 (B) Squadron and served as a S/Ldr flight commander with No.218(B) Squadron during 1941. While with 115 & 218 his service number was 40048.

    Any help welcome.

    Steve,

    Look at this interesting website

    www.allenby.info/aircraft/planes/40/argibbes.html

Fascinating family, with a sad ending.

His service record is available on the Australian NA site:
Its under a different service number:
GIBBES AUGUSTUS RODNEY : Service Number - 267505 : Date of birth - 05 Jan 1915 : Place of birth - Unknown : Place of enlistment - Unknown : Next of Kin - GIBBES L

AUS$15 will get you his casualty file which is not yet scanned.

Looks like Wellington HE266 lost on op to Citebo (based on N.G. Shultz lost on that date - They Shall Not Grow Old)

Wellington HE266 was in my files as well, however doubtful as AB Serials has this aircraft being lost 20-8-1943 with 40 Sqn on a raid to Messina.

    Henk,

HE266 entry in Air-Britain is in error, it seems, as David Gunby's 40 Sqn history, Sweeping the Skies, records only the loss of HF688 on this date (19/20 Aug 43), on a raid against the beaches at Sapri-Paola.
