Default Leading Airman Maurice A. Pacey, Telegraphist Air Gunner FAA, 1940-1941.

    Hallo all,

This Telegraphist Air Gunner was crewed with Petty Officer Frederick Charles Rice during 1940-1941 aboard a Swordfish floatplane from HMS Warspite. He made significant contributions to the work of the crew during the Second Battle of Narvik and the Battle of Mapatan. The pilot and the officer observer were decorated for both actions.

In the current issue of 'BRITAIN AT WAR' there is a very good article on the pilot (Rice). In it the author mentions that Pacey was Mentioned in Despatches for the Narvik battle. However try as I might I cannot find Pacey anywhere on the London Gazette website.

Can anyone please help clarify the issue of whether he was awarded the MiD or not ? I am also hoping to find his middle name.

    Regards,

    Martin Gleeson.

    Edit:
From the Gazette page posted by Col - I have confirmed that the current search index on the new website covers Notices and Honours only and does not include Supplements. This means that the current search boxes will only find the data above and that none of the information on the Supplement relating to Gallantry Awards and MiD will be searched/found.

The Aeroplane, Volume 61 in Google Books I think references his MiD

    Hello,

For Acting Petty Officer Airman Maurice George Pacey's MiD (For courage, coolness and devotion to duty in the Battle of Cape Matapan):

    https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...upplement/4372

Also mentions Lieutenant-Commander Arthur Seymour Bolt's Bar to the Distinguished Service Cross, and MiD to Petty Officer Airman Frederick Charles Rice.

You will find an excellent account of this action, here:

    The Swordfish Story.
    Sturtivant,Ray, ISO
    London:Arms & Armour,1993
    pp.72-3.

And a lesser account , here:

Air War For Yugoslavia, Greece and Crete 1940-41.
Shores,Christopher, Cull, Brian & Nicola Malizia.
    London:Grub Street,1987.
    p.161

    Ross, Paul and Col

Many thanks for resolving fully my query on Pacey.

As the list posted by Ross shows MG Pacey does not appear for his MiD when one tries his surname. Frustrating, but not unique. This was my initial problem.

    Ross.
Since late last night I have been trying the first link you kindly provided, to enter the year and page. Unfortunately I am still receiving the following message; "Sorry, we are currently experiencing some technical difficulties. Please come back soon."I fear the 'new, improved' LG website has more than simple teething problems.

    Regards and thanks once more,

    Martin.

    Hi Martin,

Not so much a problem with the LG site but one of the data dump I am using at the moment.

The glitch is cause due to the different addressing systems of Notice/Index and Supplements.

    https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...upplement/4935

I'll post a summary of the current state of play on the LG thread to keep it together as a reference and hopefully cover "what used to work and does not now" for information.

    Hi

I have just picked up these posts. I am currently researching Maurice George Pacey for his granddaughter. From the information I have I am not clear if his MiD was for Narvik or Matapan. Can this be clarified please?
