Default Sergeant Reginald Charles ENGLAND RAF

    Hi,

Looking for cause of death of the above. CWG give a date of death as 29.10.1941. He was at the time serving with No.218 Squadron, on checking the ORB there were no operations either side of this date and the only incident was a crash landing of Wellington X9833 HA-A at Washpit Farm, Rougham at 12:50hrs skippered by Sgt Tompkins.

    Any pointers appreciated.

    Cheers

Ancestry.co.uk has him listed in the National Probate Calendar, and has his place of death as Appleby, Westmorland, which might hopefully be useful.

The wording of the Probate calender is worth taking into account. Normally, and I say normally, when death was due to war operations, crash, shooting down etc, the probate calender will say ' died on war service', in the case of this man, its says as mentioned above:

ENGLAND Reginald Charles of 126 Wallasey Road, Wallasey Cheshire died 29 Oct 1941 at Appleby Westmoreland.. Administration was to his mother.

So, he died at Appleby Westmoreland, the names on the register either side of him are elderly people, not other young service men. freebmd.org.uk

The unit was based at Marham in Norfolk at this time??
he was resident at 126 Wallasey Road, Wallasey Cheshire
He is commemorated at BIRKENHEAD (LANDICAN) CREMATORIUM, Cheshire

his is listed as Died on Active Service in Flight magazine: http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchi...20C.%20England

Was he a flight crew member? Note that CWGC do not give him a trade (Gunner, WOP etc), when was he last mentioned in the ORB prior to his death?

I would surmise a death due to natural causes or non aviation accident but he was quite a bit north of where he was based and from where he was from.
