In AD 140 the Roman Army was much engaged in keeping the Picts/Scots at bay (so not much has changed there!). I suspect that at Old Sarum there might have been a detachment of Roman Light Cavalry who’s operational task was to see that The Natives in them parts remained “quelled”!! But are you suggesting that some aerial activity might have preceded the Wright Bros?!!

    Hi Alain
From RAF Squadrons by C G Jefford, he has 231 Sqn with Lysanders at Newtonards from 15th Jul 1940, in Oct 1941(still at Newtonards) they acquired Tomahawks and left the airfield in Dec 1941.
Old Sarum is more difficult as Jefford lists about 20+ Sqns that used the airfield but gives no dates. I haven't yet looked at the individual Sqns but will try to do so as in the Sqn listing he does giver dates

Source Jefford-RAF Squadrons who places the other Sqns as outside your time frame
