    Hello

    CARNEGIE, Henry - Sgt(WoP-A/G) - 1590461 - the Newcastle Journal of August 11th 1944 reported the following:

Crowds saw Forest Hall man drown
The seeming indifference of holidaymakers on the banks of the River Wye to a bathing tragedy which occurred in their midst was mentioned at the inquest on Sergeant Henry Carnegie (33) of Vulcan Terrace, Forest Hall, whose body was recovered from the river on Monday afternoon.
Carnegie was at a West of England R.A.F. station, where the inquest was heard.
Evidence was given by Sergeants A. P. P. J. Derham and Brennan, of attempts they made to rescue Carnegie when he got into difficulties as they were bathing together. None of them however, was a strong swimmer.
Replying to the acting coroner, Derham said there were other people on the bank but none came to their aid, except one R.A.F. man who was bathing.
    SUBJECT TO CRAMP
Sergt. Brennan said he thought the people on the bank could have heard him shouting.
Sergt. F. J. Douall, who was also with the party, said Carnegie had told him he was subject to attacks of cramp.
L.A.C. F. Haskell, who recovered the body, said there was a crowd of people on the bank, but they did not know whether someone had been drowned or whether it was a joke.
Recording a verdict of ‘Accidental death,” the acting coroner said that unless people were actually watching a bathing party it was easy for a bather to disappear and not be missed. It was just possible that the people on the bank thought the sergeants were joking. That might have been why they did no go to their assistance.

The Graves Registration Report Form lists his unit as '2 A.C.W.'

    Regards
