    Default Vic Davies DFC

Can anybody help me with a DFC citation (or background information) relating to Victor William Davies, known as Vic Davies. He has died on April 30, aged 91, in Newport, Shropshire, and I am a local journalist who wants to do a tribute/obituary.

Thanks for anything you can come up with

It was Gazetted in a Birthday Honour List so not an immediate award.

    Ross,

Our enquirer, would be well-advised to seek out the following publication, which provides biographical details and recommendations for the awards to Davies and Topper:

The Distinguished Flying Cross and How it was Won 1918-1995 - Vol.II. M-Z.
    Carter,Nick & Carol
    London:Savannah Publications,1998.
    Appendix Two. pp.1969-75.

    Ross, Hi,

If this is your man then it seems likely that he Enlisted (1580346) between Apr – Oct 1941 (location not known).

    26th Aug. 1943.
1580346 Sgt Victor William DAVIES Commissioned Probationary/Pilot Officer (Emergency) (Officer’s Number 161692) in the RAF Volunteer Reserve (General Duties Branch).

    Confirmation and promotion
Plt. Offs. (prob.) confmd. in appts. and to be Flg. Offs. (war subs.): —
    V. W. DAVIES (161692). 26th Feb. 1944.

He was in 627 Sqn - which might bear some investigation?

    Hi Peter,

The OR service number issue took place at Birmingham which is consistent with the location the original poster gave of Shropshire.

Thank you for these replies. The information about his squadron has turned up some information on the internet about a Vic "Garth" Davies DFC who was shot down in a Halifax, successfully evaded, and joined 627 Squadron Mosquitos.
I am hoping to hear from his family who would be able to confirm whether or not this is the same person.
Thank you too for the recommendation of the book, but the only copy I can see for sale on the internet is priced at 165. I could try buying it on expenses I suppose...!

I have now spoken with his daughter. She is actually in the process of writing a book about his fascinating story. He was awarded the DFC for sustained heroism. I'll post more details of him for interest soon after the obituary has appeared.

    Thanks to all

    Hello

His evasion report is in WO 208/3330 in Kew, report # 1664, with an appendix C in WO 208/5582. He came down in the area of Charleroi in Belgium, and crossed the border into France in the Maubeuge area.

DAVIES, Victor William, F/O (161692, RAFVR*) - No.627 Squadron - Distinguished Flying Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 21 September 1945. Citation in Air Ministry Bulletin 19737.

"A navigator of outstanding ability, this officer has participated in a large number of attacks against heavily defended targets. He has also navigated his aircraft in attacks against very small precision targets. In the face of the enemy, Flying Officer Davies has always displayed cool courage and great resolution. Early in his operational career, this officer’s aircraft was shot down in France. He managed to evade capture and returned to this country where he resumed operational flying with undiminished enthusiasm."
