    Default WAAF Poling, Dorothy

I am researching ACW2 Dorothy Poling, my father's first wife, and found the reference to her in this forum. I am trying to find out what base she was posted at and any other information available, particularly her parents names if anyone would know how to find that. Her maiden name was Sidebottom, she died August 14, 1944 and is buried in Rothwell Cemetary. My father was RCAF Sgt. john Allen Poling who was assigned to 1658 HCU. Any help would be appreciated.

I have requested better photos if their is a willing volunteer in the area from the findagrave.net website.

    http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg...5&ref=acom

Alternatively, you could pay the nice folks at twgpp.com website who ought to have photos.
As it is a family headstone/marker I'd expect she is buried with her parents.

if you get his marriage certificate her fathers name will be listed on it.

POLING, Dorothy - she's listed in the Statutory Deaths Register for Scotland on the Scotland's People website. She died at the Caledonian Hotel, Edinburgh, at 11.55 p.m. on August 14th 1944. Cause of death is listed as Natural Causes due to a "Sub-Arachnoid Haemorrhage (rupture of congenital cerebral aneurysm)."
Her husband is John Allen Poling (Sergeant, Royal Canadian Air Force), and her usual address is listed as 23, Holmesley Lane, Rothwell, Leeds.

She is also remembered, rather poignantly, in the Yorkshire Post of August 14th 1952, in the Roll of Honour:

POLING, nee Sidebottom - if we should forget, who would remember. Treasured memories of our only beloved daughter, A.C.W. Dorothy POLING, W.A.A.F., died suddenly, August 14th 1944, in her 21st year; also in dear memory of our dear nephew, L.A.C HAROLD HADFIELD, R.A.F.V.R., killed in Persia, January 10th, 1943 - your lonely mother and Dad, Aunties, Uncles and Cousins.

Harold Hadfield, 1010080 is listed on the CWGC website as being with 454 (R.A.A.F.) Squadron.

    Regards

    Simon

EDIT - her parents were Harry Sidebottom, Colliery Clerk, and Violet Sidebottom, nee Fielding

    Default Overwhelmed and thankful

Thank you so much for this and the other speedy replies to my query. This is way more than I expected and hugely helpful. Dorothy died two days after their marriage while on their honeymoon. We had very little information.

    terribly sad Ron,.

have you gotten your fathers RCAF service record from Ottowa, there might be some mention in it, some compassionate leave he received etc.

is your father still alive? Did he make it to a front line unit before the end of the war?

I did get his records from Ottawa, Dennis. I have a very good picture of his war years now. He didn't make it to the front. He was sent home after his Halifax bomber crashed during a traing run nrear Marston Moor. Three other members of his crew weren't so lucky. He died in 1992.

Thanks for the crash details Col. It was interesting in that it doesn't completely mesh with a letter my dad wrote home after the accident. He said, "My pilot, rear gunner and flight control officer were killed. The fuselage of the kite broke in two and I was thrown out into the mud of a plowed field." Do you have any idea who the rear gunner would be? In his letter he said the rear gunner was in the crash position next to him when they crashed.
