    NOTE:
Australian (NAA) Documents on F/O. E. S. Taylor show a/c types, serials and crews.
The Baltimore was leading the Ferry Flight from Malakal to Juda and it would apear that all crashed in the Malakal area.
Also indecated is that these eight airmen were intered in a Conmmunal grave at Malakal Christian Cemetery.
However it would also seem on reading the documents that not all the airmen's remains were in the event, recovered from the crash sites.

Presume that should be Juba, Sudan? Not a terribly pre-possessing location even in the early 50's!

    Martyn,

'Greensditch' doesn't ring a bell for Wiltshire. I wonder if it's a misinterpretation for Grim's Ditch or Grim's Dyke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grim%27s_Ditch). There's a Grim's Ditch near Coombe Bissett (http://history.wiltshire.gov.uk/comm...com2.php?id=70). Using Streetmap it is about 4 km south of the village.

    Brian,

A report in the Western Gazette, 18 August 1944 doesn't actually state the location of the accident, but relates a story from a US airman who was given a lift by CECIL on his motor cycle just prior to the crash. He had been walking along New Bridge Road, Salisbury in the direction of the Blandford road when he was overaken by a motor cyclist who offered him a lift. They passed through the village of Coombe Bissett and then reached the passengers destination, the deceased then set off in the direction of Blandford.

So your thoughts on the location seem spot on.

Got it - Grim's Ditch (which marks the county boundary between Wiltshire and Hampshire) crosses the Salisbury - Blandford road (A354) - at Swayne's Firs. Grim's Ditch is actually quite fragmented and I hadn't noticed this element first time round. Swayne's Firs is at the end of a long straight stretch of road to the southwest of CB (great for speeding - in my younger days of course!).

    LOUGHTON, JOSEPH ALFRED
    Rank: Leading Aircraftman
    Service No: 1140071
    Date of Death: 12/08/1944
    Age: 40
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Grave Reference: Sec. G.G. Grave I.1.
    Cemetery: CLEETHORPES CEMETERY
Additional Information: Son of Thomas and Alice Loughton, of Cleethorpes; husband of Olivia Loughton, of Cleethorpes. Killed by a hit and run driver who was never found despite extensive police inquiries in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire plus a special SOS appeal for witness on the wireless. Joe was cycling on the Fosse Way north of Brough, towards RAF Swinderby, when he was struck from behind by a vehicle going in the same direction and severely injured. Even worse, Coroner Norman revealed at the inquest: “Someone dragged the body onto the grass … Someone should have a great load on his conscience.” Joe left children June, 12, and John, 6.

    Hello

INKSTER, Christine - ACW2c - 2118405 - the Statutory Deaths Register on the Scotland's People website records her as Christine Jane Inskter, book keeper, aged 34 (not 32 as per CWGC). She died at 2.20 a.m at Culduthel Hospital due to pulmonary TB.

HARRIS, Douglas Wesley - AC1c - 1530357 - the Buckinghamshire Advertiser and Free Press of August 19th 1944 reported that he was "killed at sea while serving with the R.A.F."
