    Default Sgt Jack Johnson 1147170, 175 Sqn, d. 11/12/42?

    Hello everyone

Can anyone give details for the loss of Sgt Jack Johnson, 1147170, of 175 Squadron, who was killed on December 11th 1942, aged 22? He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

    Regards

    Simon, Hi,
V slight prob wrt yr Jack Johnson. Found parents (NoK) Marriage via Freebmd. Jack not amongst the several progeny listed (Freebmd) therefrom, but appears in the Dec Qtr 1920 with, apparently, same parents – and in the appropriate location/time frame (Freebmd error?). Enlisted RAFVR (end?) Sep 39 1147170 in Block 935000-1149977.

    Hello

I can't find him in the Squadron ORB, there's absolutely nothing in the form 540, neither in the form 541. The Squadron was training at that time, flying Hurricane IIBs.

We may have a clerical error in the CWGC database, about the unit ?

It might pay to check the archived Henk Welting's thread about 11th December 1942, to see if anything was mentioned then ?

    Thanks for the replies.

Joss, Henk did indeed have him with 175 Sqn in his listing for 11/12/44 (to which Col has posted the link to while I'm typing this). I'd done a search on the Forum using his Service Number, but with Service Number on Henk's thread was mis-typed as 114170 so the thread didn't come up, unsurprisingly). The GRO RAF Overseas Deaths database also has him listed with 175 Sqn.

    Regards

    Hello

An update, all of four and a half years on, to add to the mystery:

The Sunderland Echo of August 6th 1943 carried the following snippet:

Sergt-Pilot J. Johnson, R.A.F. (22), 85 General Havelock Road, previously reported missing, now reported to have been drowned.

The National Probate Calendar entry for him has 'died on or since 11 December 1942.'

    Regards

    Simon
